Embracing Down Syndrome and Autism Diversity
by Mayte Castro

In our busy lives filled with school, work, and holidays, there are two days that may not look like much, but are really important. On March 21st and April 2nd, our LIA community celebrated Down Syndrome and Autism Awareness Days. On these days we got to learn more about these conditions and the people who live with them. Down Syndrome and Autism are two distinct yet often misunderstood developmental disorders that affect individuals in unique ways. Both conditions present challenges, but they also offer opportunities for growth, understanding, and acceptance. In this article, we will explore what these conditions are, how they manifest, and how we can create a more inclusive environment for individuals who experience them.
Down Syndrome:
What it is: Down syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs when there is an extra copy of chromosome 21 in a person's cells. This extra genetic material interferes with the normal development of the body and brain, resulting in a range of characteristic physical features. Down syndrome continues to be the most common chromosomal disorder. Each year, about 6,000 babies are born in the US with Down syndrome, which is about one in every 700 babies born.
Autism Spectrum Disorder:
What it is: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that arises from differences in the brain. While some cases of ASD may be caused by known genetic differences, others still remain unknown. ASD affects a person's behavior, communication, interaction, and learning abilities in varying ways, all of which are influenced by the individual's unique needs. This condition can begin to manifest before a child is three years old and may persist throughout their life. Children with ASD can have interpersonal difficulties such as making friends, communicating, and understanding social expectations. The first signs and symptoms of ASD can vary widely and appear at different times. Some people on the autism spectrum show signs within the first few months of life, while others don't show signs until much later.
Embracing diversity
One of the key ways to embrace diversity in individuals with Down Syndrome and ASD is through education and awareness. It is important for society to understand that these individuals have their own unique abilities and strengths, and should not be defined solely by their conditions. By educating ourselves, we can better support and advocate for individuals with ASD or Down syndrome.
Another important aspect of embracing diversity is to create a space of inclusion and belonging. Individuals with Down Syndrome and ASD should be treated with respect and dignity, and given the same opportunities as everyone else. This can include providing them with access to education and social activities, as well as promoting positive representation in social media.
Furthermore, it is important to listen to and learn from individuals with Down Syndrome and ASD themselves. By valuing their perspectives and experiences, we can gain a deeper understanding of their needs and desires, and work together to create more inclusive and supportive environments for them.
In conclusion, it is crucial for high school students like us to take the initiative in embracing diversity in individuals with Down Syndrome and ASD. It is essential for creating a more compassionate and inclusive society. By educating ourselves, fostering inclusion, and listening to their voices, we can help to break down barriers and create a world where everyone is valued and accepted for who they are, ensuring they have a fulfilling experience in and out of school.

Jugando Sin Límites: Un Día de Alegría y Conexión
By Mauricio Sandino

November 9, 2024, will be remembered by many as a day filled with smiles, laughter, and unforgettable moments. During this day, dedicated to granting everyone access to sports, children with special conditions filled a sports field with energy and enthusiasm, proving that sports have no barriers or limits.
The joy was palpable from the very beginning. The children, some dressed in colorful uniforms and others simply with excitement shining on their faces, chased after the ball with an intensity that transcended physical or mental limitations. Every pass, every goal, and every burst of laughter felt like a small victory, celebrating life itself.
It was impossible not to be swept up in the atmosphere of happiness. The beaming faces of the kids as they managed to kick the ball or celebrate a goal were heartwarming. There were no competitions or comparisons, just a safe space where each child could shine in their own way.
Laughter and applause mixed with encouragement from those around them, no matter the different backgrounds; when that ball was in play, everybody was a part of the same team. Every play was filled with meaning, reminding us that the true beauty of sports lies in human connection and the ability to enjoy together beyond any differences.
The children are left not only with the experience of playing soccer but also feeling valued and celebrated by those around them. It was a reminder that happiness can be found in the simplest things, like sharing a special moment on the field.
Saturday, November 9, was more than just an event; it was a day of playing without limits. It was a morning filled with joy, a celebration of diversity, and a reminder that everyone has a place to shine.
The Power of Optimism
By Bloom
People often underestimate the extent to which our mind influences our daily lives and overall well-being. Every single thing we do, from making decisions to interacting with others, is significantly shaped by the mindset we adopt. Even challenges can become opportunities for growth with the right mindset. That’s where optimism comes in.
Optimism provides the unique ability and perspective to see possibilities in all situations, allowing us to maintain a positive outlook on life and a strong belief in our capacity to overcome adversity. Many confuse optimism with simply ignoring problems and pretending everything is perfect. However, optimism is about focusing on what can be done and the opportunities available. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, teenagers who reported feeling optimistic, happy, and loved were more likely to reach their 20s and 30s in good cardiometabolic health compared to those with fewer of these psychological assets.
So, how can you cultivate optimism in your life?
-
Reframe your common thoughts
Instead of being consumed with negative thoughts on a daily basis or when confronted with challenges, try adopting a more positive and hopeful mindset. If you’re facing a setback, try viewing it as a temporary situation. Believe in your ability to overcome obstacles. Reframing your thoughts will give you the mental energy and clarity to face your problems.
2. Celebrate small wins
Every accomplishment counts, no matter how small or big it may be. If you finish your homework on time or manage a difficult conversation, you’re making progress. Having a positive self-perception and confidence will enable you to approach life with a positive attitude, leading to a more rewarding life experience.
3. Build your own supportive network
Optimistic minds attract optimistic minds. Having a positive outlook and a hopeful attitude will draw others with similar energy toward you, leading to more fulfilling social interactions. A strong, positive, and trustworthy social support network can foster a sense of belonging and further enhance your overall happiness.
4. Practice gratitude
A greater appreciation for life’s blessings and a sense of gratitude can lead to increased happiness and well-being. Focus on the positive aspects of your life and express gratitude for them. Another crucial thing you can do for your mental health is savor the present moment. Be thankful for small joys. Living life with gratitude will shift your perspective toward a more positive outlook.
Optimism is like a muscle. The more you practice it, the stronger it becomes. By intentionally seeking the positive side of things, staying hopeful, and believing in your ability to shape your life, you can transform challenges into opportunities for growth. Instead of thinking, “Why me?” ask yourself, “What can I learn and how can I grow from this?”
Always remember that you control your own life; your mindset can change your story if you approach it from the right perspective.
